Description
Turmeric is the fastest way to get a brilliant yellow onto natural fiber and the first botanical dye most people try. Scour the fiber, mordant with alum at around 15% of dry fiber weight, dissolve the powder in hot water and strain, then hold at a gentle simmer for 30-60 minutes. Adding soda ash shifts the color toward orange and red-brown. Turmeric is a fugitive dye and will fade with prolonged sun exposure, so keep finished pieces out of direct light. Not for human or animal consumption.
