About Black Walnut Hull Powder

Create rich browns, warm tans, caramel shades and deep earthy colors with Black Walnut Hull Powder from The Dye Store. Naturally rich in tannins and coloring compounds, black walnut hull is a classic material for botanical textile dyeing. Depending on concentration and process, colors can range from lighter tan shades to deep walnut brown. Not for human or animal consumption

How to use it

  1. Scour. Wash your fiber to remove oils, waxes and factory finishes.
  2. Mordant. Prepare the fiber with the recommended mordant for your fiber type.
  3. Extract. Soak the powder in warm water before adding it to the dye bath.
  4. Dye. Add wet fiber and hold below the recommended maximum temperature.
  5. Cool and rinse. Let the fiber cool, then rinse until the water runs clear.
  6. Wash. Finish with a pH-neutral soap and dry out of direct sunlight.

This is a fine dye powder. Wear a dust mask when weighing and mixing, work in ventilation, use dedicated equipment, wear gloves, and keep it away from children and pets. Not for human or animal consumption.
