Match your mordant or dyeing auxiliary to the process

Explore alum, iron, cream of tartar, calcium carbonate and soda ash for textile dyeing. These materials have different roles: they are not interchangeable fixatives, and not every item in this collection is a mordant. Select a complete method suited to your fiber and dye before choosing supplies.

Alum and iron appear in natural-dye processes, while cream of tartar and calcium carbonate may serve as auxiliaries in particular recipes. Soda ash is used to raise pH in suitable fiber reactive dye methods and may also appear in scouring recipes. Follow the instructions for the exact chemical and textile involved. Potassium aluminum sulfate and aluminum acetate are different materials and should not be substituted gram for gram.

Weigh ingredients accurately and record the dry weight of the fabric when a method specifies a percentage based on fiber weight. Test a small swatch before preparing a whole garment. Results depend on preparation, fiber, dye, water and the complete process; adding more auxiliary does not automatically improve color retention.

Use dedicated dyeing tools and appropriate protective equipment. Visit the Learning Center for preparation guidance, or explore natural dyes and textile reactive dyes. Product pages list available sizes and current stock.
